In a very short time, generative texts and images have become established in communication, followed by dozens of other software integrations. A veritable hype has erupted in the advertising industry, driven by the desire to profitably adopt generative AI as quickly as possible. I, too, was fascinated by the results and the speed. Yet, as someone who values diversity and identity, I can already sense what lies ahead — and how crucial it will be to protect and nurture authentic creative processes. It's a conversation I actively engage in — most recently at the 2024 Congress of the Institute for Intellectual Property in Basel.

THE ARTIFICIAL METAL SINGER

Over the past few years, I’ve been playing drums in a progressive metal band. Our music is complex and demanding, which has made it difficult to find the right singer. With the rise of new technologies, we decided to also explore an alternative path — using AI to create a complete sound experience for metal lovers. What you hear was written and composed by our guitarist, Andrea Tonni. The chords, beats and riffs were developed and performed by Convoy (Jürg Vosbeck on bass, Andrea Tonni on guitars and me on drums) then rearranged and completed with AI-generated vocals. The result is a glimpse into how Convoy might sound as a fully formed metal band.
